The Dr. Bernstein Clinics are the largest medically supervised weight loss organization in the world. With 57 clinics in Canada and the USA, they are instrumental in offering solutions for weight problems that have been plaguing people for a lifetime. They also treat childhood obesity, a North American epidemic growing at an alarming rate.

Dr. Bernstein graduated from the University of Toronto in 1966 and interned at Mount Sinai Hospital. As his journey as a physician progressed, his personal goals and professional aspirations have always had one commonality: a conscientious commitment to go beyond monitoring and restoring the health of his patients, but to truly improve their quality of life.

Following his internship, he went right into family practice. He also took on the responsibility of doing geriatric work at the Baycrest Centre. His reputation as a GP, based in the Cabbagetown area of Toronto, saw him quickly develop a very busy family practice. This included becoming the busiest family doctor at the obstetric ward at Mount Sinai Hospital. Dr. Bernstein has the unique distinction of delivering the last baby to be born at the eminent institute's old building, as well as the first to be born in the new facility, all within hours!

It was in these formative family practice years that he became disappointed with the inadequate standards for the treatment of obesity administered by physicians. Concurrently, his interest in the condition of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) led him to develop a method of controlling hunger through the introduction of vitamins, minerals and proper dieting that proved effective in reducing cravings. He also discovered the American Society of Bariatric Physicians, an organization devoted to educating physicians in methods of treating obesity. Unlike the commercial weight loss centers, the Bernstein clinics can treat overweight people with complex problems such as diabetes, heart and cardio related conditions, cancer and the wide spectrum of hormone and metabolic disorders. The Dr. Bernstein Diet uses regular grocery store foods, and absolutely no diet drugs or pills.

Specifically, the program facilitates the loss of four to five pounds of ‘fatty tissue’ every week, by helping the body to break down its stored fat quicker and utilizing it for energy. It does not cause the loss of essential proteins, muscle tissue, electrolytes and bodily fluids. It gives his dieters consistently high energy levels and healthy results.

The news that people are putting themselves at risk when they undertake weight loss programs on their own is no surprise. “We have all read about the serious potential repercussions of being overweight. An equally serious approach must be taken in dealing with the problem.”

The Dr. Bernstein programs have improved the quality of life for so many patients who have endured years of failure on other programs, allowing them to finally achieve their ideal weight and the formerly elusive peace of mind.

To date he has helped over 300,000 people. After thirty years, the results he achieves every day continue to fuel his passion for helping people improve their quality of life and prospects for longevity.
